Chapter 3:
Step-By-Step Migration
In this chapter, we are going to take an environment similar to that described in the previous chapter and go through each step in the migration process giving a complete roadmap for all the tasks you need to perform to migrate from an NT 4.0 infrastructure to Windows 2003.

We will replace the existing domain controllers with new hardware. We will also point out where the actions would be different supposing you do not replace the hardware.

The before and after states are shown in the following figure where our two-domain-controller domain is migrated to a new dual domain controller Active Directory domain:

The following procedure outline will be the same for nearly every environment. While the number of domain controllers may vary and the services differ, this will form the foundation of every in-place upgrade performed.
